Old Dutch International 4? Inch Antique Embossed Stovetop Salt & Pepper SetReviewsI was a little reluctant to buy these after reading some of the reviews, but I actually really like them. They do look brown, but they are very nice quality. They look antique like. I gave them as a gift and my friend really loved them. One of the salt and pepper shakers doesn't sit completely flat. My husband got the plug to sink in enough that I kept them when I should have exchanged them. It will probably always be a problem. I do like the looks of them though. This item goes great with the canisters, and I really like the appearance. Would recommend as a compliment to the canisters. Very disappointing for a nicely designed, more unique salt & pepper shaker. Though it was well packed, the salt shaker top had a scratch in the lacquer coating. The holes in the shakers were only roughly punched and not cleanly machined to circles. The punches had sharp edges. I bought these to go with my kitchen makeover which includes copper. The ARE very dark, but I have some darker copper in my backsplash so it works out. As for quality, I think they are pretty good. I like the design on them as well. Average Rating:![]() |

The antique look of these salt and pepper shakers puts them right at home in a kitchen with exposed brick walls and racks of copper pots. Keep them handy on the stove where they'll season up stews and roasts with a good hearty shake... |

Mikasa Antique White Salt and Pepper SetReviewsWe have almost all the Mikasa Antique White pieces and love them all. These are very pretty and durable. Just as described. Each measures 3 3/4 by 2 inches and made of strong fine china. I immediately put them through the dishwasher and they came out fine, no chips or scratches. A little brighter white than I had anticipated; they are not what I would call ivory but instead a bright, slightly antique white. Nice weight but still delicate enough for a dinner party and strong enough for every day. Average Rating:![]() |

Florence's Big Book of Salt & Pepper Shakers: Identification & Value GuideReviewsI almost didn't buy this book since the reviews were fairly low, but thumbed through it twice upon receiving it...I think it one of the best books in my collection. It covers most materials used in making S&Ps, identifies a lot of the makers, (Shawnee, Occupied Japan, Hazel Atlas, etc.), the photography is good, & I'm very pleased with the information it has given me. I know it will become a well thumbed book for searching. Book was a big hit with a growing collector - some shaker's categories could be expanded upon with more detail and photos - but overall a success... This was the first book I bought on Salt and Pepper Shakers. I didn't find it helpful at all. Unless you just want a collection of S&P books, don't waste your money. The book has tons of pictures. Some of the sets shown are not "true" sets. It is a great book to get a general idea of all the many themes of salt and pepper collecting. High end and low end are all well represented. It was fun to see sets I never knew existed that I would like to have. It gave me more stuff to look for in auctions. It's always fun to add to collections! The monetary valuations of Salt & Pepper Shakers in this book are virtually useless to either a collector or seller. I have never seen a book so totally unresearched on both pricing and product description. The majority of the photos of the S&P's do not describe the material utilized in their construction, so one is left wondering if they are looking at plastic, metal or other material. No person interested in Salt & Pepper collecting should buy this as their first book. If you do, you'll be in for a big surprise when you try to buy an S&P that has been valued in this book for $12, but is belling for $48.For the more seasoned collector, it does have some decent pictures, but is more or less a rehash of better produced S&P Collecting books. If you've been collecting S&P's for over 6 months, you'll realize that this is a piece of utter tripe; execpt for the photos of the S&P's. Antique Trader Salt And Pepper Shaker Price GuideReviewsI bought one of these for my Mother who has collected for years. My recommendation is to save your money, as this is one of the worst. Very poorly done, appears to have been tossed together in a hurry to beat a deadline or something. Contrary to the two reviews here, the S&P guide has met with overwhelming positive comments directed to me and Krause Publications. An incredibly detailed table of contents is found on page 4 of the book ... there's no excuse for lazy reading by an inattentive buyer. Did they contact the two main collector resources found on page 7? Plus, there's contact info for the main contributor if readers have more questions. Did they bother to call? Or did they flip through the book, and, not finding an exact match, decide it was no good? The book is also clearly divided into shakers identified by form and by maker. There have been billions of pairs of shakers made over the last 100+ years, and the fact that these two couldn't fine their exact shakers is not surprising. This is a tool, one of many that collectors should use. Buy the book and find out for yourself. I waited over 6 months for this lazy excuse for a guide, listing only 1000 shakers. I have about 70 from the 1940's-70's in my collection, and only found 4 in this book. By the authors own admission, he owns over 3000. Why aren't they listed? The pics are nice but the book is very poorly done. Save your money. I am extremely disappointed. Following my mother's recent death, I came across her old collection of over 80 sets - at least 90% of which are over 50 years old. I thought this book would be of help in learning about them. NOT EVEN CLOSE! While it says it lists "More than 1,000 salt & pepper shakers...." there is no index & no table of contents. Only 1 set that I have was in this book. While there are great color pictures, and similar types are together (sort of), you have to thumb through the entire book to try to find a particular item. Then do it again... and again. This is a total waste of money and a poor attempt to "Get the Shakedown on Your Collection"! I am the one who got Shook Down. I recommend trying to find a copy to look through before buying this. I wish I had. Average Rating:![]() |

A antique is describe as An antique is an old collectible item. It is collected or desirable because of its age, rarity, condition, utility, or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era in human society.
Antiques are usually objects which show some degree of craftsmanship, or a certain attention to design such as a desk or the early automobile. They are bought at antique shops, or passed down as an estate. Some valuable antiques can be bought from antique dealers and auction services or purchased online through websites and online auctions. Antique dealers are often members of national trade associations, many of which themselves belong to CINOA, a confederation of art and antique associations across 19 countries, representing 5000 dealers.
Some things are made as a collectible right away by collectible warehouse like the Bradford Exchange or the Franklin Mint. So it can be valuable as soon as you get it ..
The definition of antique varies from source to source, product to product and year to year. But, some time-tested definitions of antique deserve consideration:
* An item which is at least 50 to 100 years old and is collected or desirable due to rarity, condition, utility, or some other unique feature. Motor vehicles, tools and other items subject to vigorous use in contrast, may be considered antiques in the U.S. if older than 25 years, and some electronic gadgets of more recent vintage may be considered antiques
* antique (noun) - Any piece of furniture or decorative object or the like produced in a former period and valuable because of its beauty or rarity.
This definition allow people to make a distinction between genuine antique pieces, vintage items or collectible objects.
The alternative term antiquities is commonly used to refer the remains of ancient art and everyday items from antiquity, which themselves are often archaeological artifacts.
